Independence Course
Overview
The Independence for Quads program is a bespoke program designed to support quadriplegics in achieving greater independence in their daily lives. Led by AJ, a quadriplegic with lived experience in independent everyday tasks, this program provides personalised guidance tailored to your goals.
Over the course of five nights, you will receive one-on-one coaching, support, and practical skill development.
Inclusions
- Pre-check-in phone consultation with AJ to discuss your goals and expectations.
- Initial in-person consultation upon arrival to create a tailored program.
- Personalized 1:1 coaching with AJ throughout the stay, focusing on specific skills.
- Support from a Clinical Nurse Consultant and Occupational Therapist
- Hands-on training and practical exercises.
- Progress evaluation and recommendations for continued independence after the program.
Goals
Morning Routine Independence:
- Transfer skills (bed, wheelchair, shower, toilet, etc.)
- Bowel program management
- Continence skills
- Self-dressing techniques
Home and Kitchen Independence:
- Meal preparation and adaptive cooking techniques
- Using assistive devices for kitchen tasks
- Cleaning and household management strategies
Wheelchair skills training:
- Maneuvering in different environments
- Navigating curbs, ramps, and public spaces
Public Transport Navigation:
- Planning and executing independent trips
- Accessible transit systems and strategies
- Travel strategies
Technology for Accessibility:
- Computer and smartphone adaptations
- Voice-controlled devices
- Home automation for increased independence
- Assistive technology for workplace efficiency
