NDIS Short Term Respite

Sargood on Collaroy is proud to be part of The Royal Rehab Group, a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) registered provider. Our provider number is 405002604.

The NDIA have made recent changes to their operational guidelines for Short Term Accommodation & Assistance which is now known as Short Term Respite.

The NDIA describe Short Term Respite (STR) as allowing you to have time apart, for at least one night, from your primary informal supports who give you significant daily support. This provides the opportunity for you to be supported by someone else, while giving your primary informal supports a short break from their usual caring responsibilities.

The new operational guidelines for Short Term Respite contain important information about eligibility for STR. You can virew these guidelines and more information at the following link.

As everyone’s circumstances are different we encourage you to speak with your Local Area Coordinator or Support Coordinator to discuss what may be covered for you by the NDIS.

We are proud to be part of The Royal Rehab Group, a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) registered provider of a range of disability supports including Short Term Respite.

Our Provider number is 405002604.

Short term respite gives you time apart from your usual care arrangements. It also gives your primary informal supports, a chance for a short break so they can continue in their caring role.

By primary informal supports, The NDIA mean your family, friends or unpaid carers.

Short term respite is paid supports to make sure you can keep doing the things your informal supports normally help you do in your day to day life, while they take a break.

As of October 1, 2024, new NDIS legislation was introduced and on November 27, 2024, FAQs were released clarifying the definition and purpose of STA. You can access this information here on the NDIS website.

We are proud to be a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) registered provider of Short Term Accommodation and Assistance.

The NDIS may fund up to 28 days of Short Term respite per year. You can use this funding flexibly, for example, you might want to use it in a block of up to 14 days at a time or for one weekend a month.

From the information currently available from the NDIA, our understanding is that following people are ineligible to stay using NDIS STR funding:

  • Those who live alone
  • Those who live in supported independent living
  • Those who are travelling with their informal supports
  • Those who receive more than 18 hours per day of paid supports

If your circumstances do not meet the NDIS STR Criteria, we can offer you an alternative package. This package can also be accessed using your Core Support funds but includes an out-of-pocket accommodation expense per night.

As everyone’s circumstances are different we encourage you to speak with your Local Area Coordinator or Support Coordinator to discuss what may be covered for you by the NDIS.

You may not need funding for Short Term Respite put into your plan. You can choose to use your Core budget on supports like Short Term Respite if it helps you pursue your goals and meet the NDIS reasonable and necessary funding criteria.

If you are feeling unsure if you can use your NDIS Plan to fund Short Term Respite we encourage you to speak with your Local Area Coordinator, Support Coordinator or Plan Manager to discuss what may be covered by the NDIS for you.

You can’t use short term respite funding to go on a holiday. Having a holiday with your family or friends is a good way to relax and visit a new place. However, the NDIS won’t pay for holidays.
