What is Short Term Respite?

Short Term Respite allows you to have time apart from your primary informal supports overnight. It allows you to be supported by someone else and gives your primary informal supports a short break to sustain your usual arrangements. This is for up to 14 days at a time, and for up to 28 days per year.

Who can access Short Term Respite?

The NDIS can only fund Short Term Respite if it relates to your disability support needs. Generally, Short Term Respite will be available if you:

  • live with, or get daily drop-in support from, your primary informal supports, and
  • get disability-related support from your primary informal supports for more than 6 hours a day, on a long-term basis.

As of October 1, 2024, new NDIS legislation was introduced and on November 27, 2024, FAQs were released clarifying the definition and purpose of Short Term Respite.

The NDIS may fund up to 28 days of Short Term Respite per year. You can use your Short Term respite funding flexibly. For example, you might want to use it in a block of up to 14 days at a time or for one weekend a month.

As everyone’s circumstances are different we encourage you to speak with your Local Area Coordinator or Support Coordinator to discuss what may be covered for you by the NDIS.

Short Term Respite is not for holidays. The NDIS only fund Short Term Respite in line with their operational guidelines.

Additional room charges, including a second room for carers or family members, are out of pocket expenses which will generally not be funded by the NDIS.

These charges will be invoiced separately to you and will need to be paid for privately at check-in.

Our support workers have been trained to support the complex care, participation and access needs of people living with spinal cord injury. During a stay, you will have access to these support workers 24 hours a day.

The accessible rooms all feature the very latest in adaptive technology, home automation and assistive technology.

We have a comprehensive range of daily living equipment that can be provided for you, during your stay.

You have access to a clinical nurse and an occupational therapist all included your package.

You have access to supported activities 9am – 5 pm each day of your stay.
